Barbara Mueller Prayer Service Memorial, by Ron and Don Mueller (07/30/2008)
Good Evening. I'm Ron Mueller, one of "Barb's Boy's, and my twin brother, Don. On behalf of Theresa, Joe, Ed, Dave, Paul, Larry, Don and myself, we wish to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers, and support for the past few days. Our family wants to welcome you to the celebration of Barb's life. Our family thought it would be better to collect the immediate families thoughts and consolidate them in this message.
Mom touched many people and we are all mourning as one community. Wehave shared many stories from friends and relatives the past few dayswhere we have enjoyed laughter and tears together.
The gift of her legacy is something to celebrate. She leaves behinda large footprint of her loves, work, and values that we have, and will continue to learn from.
Mom had several major things she loved. The first, and most important, family.
She married Dad in 1954. Now for those who didn't know Dad, he had great wit for humor. One story that was shared this week was Dad saying, "if I would have known that she had all those babies in her, I would have never married her". And "I think we just figured out where all these babies are coming from". Mom and Dad were the definition of love. They are now back together again.
Part of our family was Fr. Maurice Mueller from Nativity Church in Fargo. Once when we were visiting, Mom found a book in the back of the church and signed it, "Barb Mueller and sons". She thought she had signed the guest book, when it was really a book for the sick, so in Mass that Sunday, we prayed for Barb Mueller and sons.
The CB era hit the farm in the 70's, and actually became a very helpful technology in farming back then. How fitting that we became known as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. We can always win that trivia question, as Joe was Sneezy, Ed was Happy, Ron was Bashful, Dave was Sleepy, Paul was Doppy (sorry Paul), Larry was Doc, and of course, I was Grumpy! These dwarfs eventually grew to adulthood and through our master-in-chief's direction, we learned the meaning of teamwork and never quit until the job gets done. Theresa now will take on the role of Snow White.
Mom would give the shirt off her back for anyone. But this was reversed one hot day in the sugar beet field when a salesperson stopped at the field and she had a tube top on. She quickly wanted the shirt offof each of our backs.
Her true passion in life was agriculture. She always looked forward to beet harvest and drove beet truck every year since the Hillsboro plant was built. One year we found a magnetic sign that said "student driver" on it, and put it on her truck when she wasn't looking. She drove her entire shift with the sign on her truck without her knowing it. She wasn't amused.
As a family, we all worked the farm together, and it was directed by Mom. Whether it was hoeing sugar beets or combining grain, it was a family farm. Agriculture became a part of all of our family and this tradition will live on for generations.
When it came to bean harvest, Mom took it upon herself to train the elevator staff on how to empty a truck. They soon learned "the Barb way". The same was true at the beet plant. And certainly we as children knew "the Barb way".
Mom always had a way with mudholes. She could always find a way to get into them, but had a hard time getting out of them. But, it was "the Barb way".
Mom always loved her flowers, and her flowerbed has been renamed "Barb's International Peace Gardens". When you come to visit, bring walking shoes, admission is free!
Mom had a very strong private faith. She didn't wear it on her coat sleeve. It was important for her to instill this faith with each of her children. Thanks Mom for teaching us this as it is helping us through these challenging days.
Mom was a caregiver. She was there to help her immediate family through illness, and provided support and comfort for her mother and several siblings. She has always been the glue of her family and ours. Infact, it should be considered superglue. It takes a special person to be that glue and caregiver, and Mom will be hard to replace.
In closing, Mom's legacy is in her family, agriculture, and the values she instilled in us. This legacy is seen in all of her children today, and in the community that she so deeply touched. That's the "Barb way". Thanks Mom!
